The Gneiss found in the Minnesota River Valley is some of the oldest rock in the world.
This metamorphic rock began as Granite that cooled ever so slowly deep under the Earth. Intense heat and pressure caused layers to form, transforming it into gorgeous layers of Gneiss. I hope you enjoy today's geological pun! More information about Minnesota geology can be found here.

There is a sign outside of Morton, Minnesota where there is a quarry for Morton Gniess which is used all over the world and can be seen in several buildings in the Twin Cities. The sign reads: "Morton is gniess, don't take it for Granite." which is punny on several leves
